Connecting MITians
Respected Sir / Madam
Warm Greetings from the Madras Institute of Technology Alumni Association, Chennai.
As you may be aware, MIT Madras was founded by Shri. C. Rajam, a great visionary, in the year 1949. He not only pioneered Engineering education in India but also paved the way for teaching newer subjects in those times, like Electronics, Instrumentation, Aeronautics and Automobile Engineering. It was clearly a bold & significant step towards nation building, post-independence.
Set-up in the verdant surroundings of a quiet suburb in Chennai, this premier institution for technical education has made a distinct mark in society. Leaders, Entrepreneurs, Scientists and Academicians have passed out of MIT campus that celebrated its Platinum Jubilee in 2024. Alumni of MIT have shone in different fields and succeeded across the globe and have nurtured the spirit of service to the world.
Some of the illustrious Alumni like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam have built the strategic missile defense capabilities and alumni like Dr. Sivan have developed the Space technology leadership of India. Over the years, the Alumni of MIT have excelled in the fields of Industry, Administration, Academics, Research and Entrepreneurship and have contributed to the growth of Science, Engineering and Technology in India and elsewhere.
Nation building for growth and self-reliance requires innovation and significant investments to develop new skills and make engineers more valuable to industry and society. Extending formal classroom-led teaching to exploration and experimentation would require the right ambience and mentorship. This is best done with a Center of Excellence approach with Academia–Industry Co-creation.
Envisioning this, the Alumni have come together to establish a dedicated Skill Development Centre within the MIT campus. This is in line with the National Skills Development Mission promoted by the Government of India to reap the demographic dividend of the youth of the nation.
In an endeavor to provide industry-ready competencies, we plan to engage a diverse set of trainers for enhancing the employability of the students. Drawn from a rich pool of Industry experts, Research Scholars and Faculty members of prestigious institutions, the learning process will be both contextual and comprehensive.
Interactions by Industry experts with the students are increasing day by day with training sessions, mock interview sessions, guest lectures, meetings between Alumni and the HODs. This unique centre is expected to provide an ideal venue to host these activities.
MITAA plans to host the facilities for Skills Development in a building with three floors with multiple facilities for learning – a Conference Hall with all accessories to conduct skill-set trainings, a state-of-the-art meeting hall that can be used to host physical and virtual meetings, guest rooms for visiting trainers/experts, and mini board rooms for campus interviews by companies. Each floor will have a built-up area of 4200 sq. ft.
The cost of constructing the new building and the ongoing maintenance of the same will be borne by MITAA (MIT Alumni Association).
At the MIT campus, Anna University will be providing the suitable place with adequate space for the building.
This project has already been approved by the Syndicate of Anna University.
We have already consulted a few architects who provided designs for the building (Ground plus 2 Floors). The cost of the project is expected to be about ₹5.00 Crore (Rupees Five Crores).
Such an initiative requires funding support from all sections of society that covers Alumni, High Networth Individuals, Foundations and Institutions with CSR mandate.
MITAA appeals to all the Alumni across the globe, industry leaders and philanthropists to contribute generously for this Critical Skills Development Project as an educational initiative.
MITAA proposes to put up a plaque/board for a particular facility (Meeting Hall, Conference Hall, Guest Rooms, or the whole building) based on the quantum of contribution. Details are given below.
Contributions will have to be made through local currency only. Contributions in foreign currency cannot be accepted.
MITAA can accept contributions from Corporates as part of their CSR activity. Any funding for the above activities qualifies under CSR funding of Schedule VII.
While thanking you all for your continued support to various initiatives of MITAA, I seek your support for this hallmark project which is expected to be completed in about 18 months' time.
Warm regards,
B. Senthilnathan
President – MITAA
